Pa los que les sobre un ifon…

August 12, 2008

In initial runs, the iPhone’s scanning showed some interesting results. Graham told the audience that the phone would just sit in a receiving facility, usually a mailroom, for a long time. Fedex and UPS generally will deliver numerous boxes in a shipment and then a secretary or internal mailman (in larger companies) will then sort everything to its final destination. But if the package is addressed to someone who doesn’t work at the company, then employees will have no real urge to move it. Calls need to be made to verify that the employee doesn’t exist and then someone will finally call the shipping company to pick the package – this all takes time, time that the phone can use to scan the internal network.

Once the phone was inside a business, Graham said most of the wireless networks were wide open. This should probably come as no surprise as companies usually trust employees and anyone’s who has made it past the front door must be friendly.

While the notion of an iPhone attack may seem a bit too Hollywood-ish to some, Graham and Maynor say the idea is much better than a hacker sitting outside of a company sniffing for wireless traffic. They say police and even average citizens are quite suspicious of people sitting in their cars with glowing computers screens. Furthermore sending a company an iPhone means you can be completely anonymous with a jailbroken iPhone and a third-party SIM card.

Companies typically spend thousands even millions of dollars on physical and network security, but Maynor said their iPhone can foil all of that by “getting past all the firewalls and crap that they’re buying.” He added that many organizations have armed guards that will stop any intruders, yet they let in the Fedex guy at 10 AM every morning.

May 30, 2008

TechniScan Medical Systems says it has developed GPU-assisted technology called UltraSoundCT, which uses ultrasound to scan a breast. For a patient, this approach is much more comfortable than a mammogram, since there is no ionization radiation and no need for the compression of a breast. On the technology side, UltraSoundCT produce two unique images of the breast; one based on the speed of sound and one based on the attenuation of sound.

The computer system uses four GeForce 8-series graphics cards to produce coronal image slices of the breast that will be exported in DICOM 3.0 format as well as full 3D views of a breast. TechniScan says that it takes just 20 minutes to render the images, compared to several hours that would be required on a CPU. According to the company, the ultrasound scan can prove be more effective in cases of dense breasts. Radiologists of a local Chicago hospital told TG Daily that they would also prefer to use this system over a mammogram if a patient has breast implants – which decrease the likelihood the lumps are detected.

“Mammography continues to be the industry standard for general breast cancer screening. However, a number of studies, including one national multicenter study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the Avon Foundation through the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN), are underway to study the role of ultrasound in screening for breast cancer. These studies are evaluating whether breast ultrasound is a comparable, and in some cases, a preferable breast screening modality for women with dense breasts and at high risk for breast cancer,” TechniScan states on its website.

Mujer vende su bebe por eBay

May 29, 2008

a German woman who attempted to sell her child on eBay.

The 23-year-old mother says she put her child up on the web site as a joke, but the authorities aren’t ready to believe her yet. The child has been taken into the custody of the state and the mother is set to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Still, one Euro for a baby that apparently cries too much doesn’t seem like that great of a deal.

iPhone 2.0 utilizará handwritting recognition de origen Chino

May 29, 2008

As previously reported, the first software to offer a handwriting recognition feature for the iPhone came from Chinese developer Hanwang Technology. Hanwang’s HWPen application allows users to draw Chinese letter shapes on the handset screen and converts these drawings into actual character inserted into whatever text field a cursor is currently positioned.

Shortly after we had learned about this software, iPhone 2.0 firmware leaks suggested that the iPhone would get handwriting recognition as a system-wide feature. Published firmware screenshots showed remarkable similarity to Hanwang’s HWPen software. In a surprising twist, Hanwang now says that Apple has acquired its handwriting recognition code.

While we are speculating at this point, we believe that Apple may have come to the conclusion that a Chinese developer may be better suited to tackle specifics and fine intricacies of machine recognition of the complicated Chinese character set than Apple’s own engineers. The fact that Hanwang’s application is capable of recognizing letter shapes from the English alphabet could be viewed as a critical feature of the whole package.

MS va a ‘incorporar’ multitouch a windows 7

May 29, 2008

Realmente patético: Vista, gotta get me some…

April 22, 2008
